THEY won the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie (World Pastry Cup) in January.

Now, the four chefs who made Malaysia proud will be part of the panel of judges who determine who receives the first Young Chef Scholarship from Sunway University.

The team, which includes Sunway University School Of Hospitality head chef Patrick Siau, will be part of a panel of seven judges to evaluate those shortlisted for the scholarship.

Sunway Education Group and Sunway University senior executive director Elizabeth Lee says the university has launched the scholarship in honour of the team’s success.

She adds that the scholarship is to help those who are not financially-able to develop a future in the culinary arts.

“It will be a scholarship like no other. It’s not about the number of As you score at school.

“But it will celebrate passion, talent and a desire to be the best in time to come,” she says during the launch of the scholarship held recently.

“Needless to say with a combination of imagination, proper training and a dash of talent, the ability to withstand a hot stove or a cold kitchen for hours, and a passion for food, we can nurture exceptional talents who will be held in high esteem.”

Qualified candidates who meet the entry requirements will first need to submit an essay on why they are the perfect candidate to receive the scholarship.

If they are shortlisted, they will then take part in a cook-off to prove their skills to a panel of judges.

The rest of the team comprising Academy of Pastry Arts Malaysia corporate pastry chef Tan Wei Loon, executive pastry chef Loi Ming Ai and Dobla Asia-Pacific corporate pastry chef Otto Tay were also present at the launch of the scholarship.

The scholarship, valued at RM150,000, will allow students to pursue the university’s Diploma in Culinary Arts programme.

Upon successful completion, the students can continue onto the Bachelor of Science in Culinary Management.
