MFL engage Englishman to produce more professional referees
JOHOR BARU: Expect the field officials to be more professional in the Malaysia Football League (MFL).
Yesterday, the MFL announced that they would name an Englishman as the general manager of the Professional Match Officials’ Malaysia (PMOM) in a bid to raise the standard of refereeing in the M-League.
Through PMOM, MFL and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) are hoping to produce more professional referees in the country.
MFL chief executive officer (CEO) Kevin Ramalingam said the Englishman would report for duty in April.
But with the cancellation of their contract with Telekom Malaysia (TM), Kevin admitted that their PMOM initiative would be scaled down to match their budget.
“All our initiatives will be reviewed, for example the PMOM will continue with smaller number of professional referees first and we will add on as our finances get better,” said Kevin.
Meanwhile, FAM president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said he understood the difficulties faced by TM and linked it to the country’s uncertain economic situation.
“We need to move on and look for new partnerships. Maybe we can even get better deals, which could be more rewarding for the M-League teams,” said Hamidin.
