GEORGE TOWN: More than 300 people of all faiths took part in the St George’s Church Bicentenary Charity and Muhibbah Run 2019 held at the Penang Municipal Park here.

The event was aimed at raising funds for the underprivileged.

Eunice Ong, 43, said the last such run was organised back in the 1990s.

“So it’s very special to us, as it also marks the bicentenary celebration for the church,” she said.

Lenny Rajamoney, 49, who was the the first to complete the race, said it was a good experience.

“The pleasant weather after the heavy rain on Friday night made the run even more enjoyable,” he said.

He added although no awards were given, he was still happy.

The 6km run started at the Penang Municipal Park and had runners going through the Botanic Gardens and Lengkok Jesselton before heading back to the park.

The event’s organising chairman Lionel Rajamoney said that the funds they raised would be given to the underprivileged community staying near the church.

Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee Chun Kit commended the church for its efforts in caring and giving back to the community.

“I believe this run will also enhance the ‘muhibbah’ spirit in the state,” he said.

He added that he was impressed to see the participants commit their Saturday morning to a good and healthy cause.

Before the run, Lionel also presented two mock cheques of RM3,000 each to the Children Protection Society and Tenaganita.
