Going the extra mile

- By KAMARUL KAMAL

KARTIANA Aziz took everyone in SMK Mantin by surprise when the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) results were announced at her school’s Dewan Anggerik last Monday.

She obtained a CGPA of 3.42. She scored scored an A- in her Visual Art, B+ in her General Studies, Malay Language and Business Studies. She made the orang asli community in Kampong Belihoi near Seremban proud of her achievements.

Kartiana became a student at SMK Mantin in 2012 when she was 13. She studied all these years without attending tuition for any subject and depended solely on her teachers.

Every Friday from 7.10am to 7.50am, she faithfully attended the Moral Uplifting class under the tutelage of academic senior assistant Dr Josephine Ong Kui Hua during her school’s Character Building Programme (CBP).

The CBP class gave her the extra edge by instilling the fighting spirit and never say die attitude namely every subject can be learned no matter how tough it may seem in the very beginning.

After she received her STPM results, she thanked Dr Ong for consistently encouraging and motivating her for the past six years.

With this result, she hopes to pursue her ambition of becoming a manager in tourism by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in hotel management at a public university if she can get a Department of Orang Asli Development (JKOA) scholarship.

Her hobbies are reading books and playing badminton.

She thanked her family - father Aziz Kalau, 45, mother Kamisah Abu Bakar, 43, and elder brother Augustinus Aziz, 24, for their support.

“The values which I have learnt through the moral lessons on Fridays are already etched in my mind.

“They have transformed me,” she said.

She hoped to get the university course of her choice.

“I plan to repay our government by giving the best service to the public sector,” she said. The writer is a teacher at SMK Mantin.
