Chance to represent Malaysia in London

-

ENGLISH is the most important language in the world and if we are to compete in this borderless world, we must master the language to be on par or even better than the rest of the world.

English Speaking Union (ESU) of Malaysia chairman Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah Tuanku Ja’afar urged students to attend the one-day special Public Speaking Workshop.

“Take part in the public speaking competition and stand a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip and represent Malaysia at the International Public Speaking Competition (IPSC) in London, from May 13 to 17,” she said at the launch of the competition last Saturday.

The ESU of Malaysia in collaboration with the Malaysian Institute for Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP) and Taylor’s College are organising the annual Public Speaking Competition with the support of the Education Ministry.

To prepare students for this competition, a one-day special Public Speaking Workshop (RM100 fee per person including refreshments ) will be held on April 7 from 9.30am to 5pm.

The heats and semi-finals will be held on April 13 from 9.30am to 5pm. It is RM50 per participant.

The venue for all events is Taylor’s College Lakeside Campus, No. 1 Jalan Taylor’s, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor.

All participants will be required to deliver a prepared speech on the theme, “A Lie Has Speed, But Truth Has Endurance” and an impromptu speech at the preliminary round before they qualify to speak on the national theme, “Nature Is A Common Language” at the finals to be held on April 20 from 2.30pm to 5pm.

Participants will be judged on the substance of their speech, expression and delivery.

The winner of the ESU-IPSC will have the opportunity to take part in the February 2020 Winter Youth Assembly at the United Nations in New York.

Taylor’s College campus director Josephine Tan said it was happy to collaborate on the event and develop students’ public speaking skills.

“Being able to articulate one’s ideas is important,” she said.

Taylor’s College also announced that it will contribute cash, trophies and prizes for the winners. The first prize winner will get RM1,000 in cash followed by the second prize winner (RM800), third prize winner (RM500) while the fourth to 10th place winners will get prizes in kind.

All workshop participants will get a certificate of participation while finalists will get a certificate of merit.

About 200 students attended the “Stand Up and Speak” session by ESU council member Chew Seng Choon during the launch.

Those present at the launch included ESU Malaysia deputy chairman Raja Tan Sri Arshad Raja Tun Uda and MIDP CEO Emellia Shariff.
