A new path in interfaith coexistence from New Zealand
THE commonly held image of Islam as portrayed by the Western press is one of terrorism, wars, poverty, immigrants, persecutions and internecine wars, especially in the Middle Eastern countries. But all this is driven by greedy political imperatives for power, wealth and territory. The actions of these countries are anathema to the true teachings of Islam.
There is, however, a refreshing spirit of Islam emerging in New Zealand as a result of the massacre of Muslim worshippers at the two mosques in Christchurch on March 15.
What was intended by the white supremacist terrorist, to cause dissension among and animosity towards the immigrant Muslim minority, instead became a clarion call that brought the citizens of New Zealand together.
This universal spirit of brotherhood has transcended differing faiths, colours and creeds in a sincere and magnificent show of solidarity best exemplified by New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern who showed exemplary leadership that could be emulated by other leaders of the world. But more so by the citizens of New Zealand from all walks of life and faiths who showed sympathy, compassion and support beyond mere rhetoric.
Among the noble expressions of compassion and support by fellow citizens are the guarding of mosques during prayer times, the special session of Parliament in which Quranic verses extolling the virtues of patience and forgiveness were recited along with prayers for the well-being of the leaders and the citizens of the nation.
And the call to prayers was heard throughout New Zealand for Friday prayers that were attended not only by Muslims but thousands of non-Muslims as well. It was most unprecedented and heart-warming to witness such a magnificent display of humanness.
And in forgiving the shooter, Imam Farid Hamid whose wife, Husne Hamid, died in the shooting, best exemplifies Allah’s injunctions in Surah An-Nur, verse 22, which states that Allah loves those who forgives for He is the most forgiving and merciful.
New Zealand has shown the way to interfaith communication and respect. There is now more than ever a need to begin to understand each other’s faiths and convictions. In fact, Allah stated in the Quran in verse 13 of Surah Al-Hujurat, “Human beings, We created you all from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you can know one another.”
The world should take the cue from New Zealand and chart a new path in interfaith coexistence, respect, goodwill and understanding.
