Duo deny helping set up illegal massage parlour
Cop and fireman claim trial to graft
SHAH ALAM: A police inspector along with a Fire and Rescue Department officer were charged in the Shah Alam Sessions Court here with accepting bribes and helping set up an illegal massage parlour.
Former Kajang police station chief Mohd Alfian Mohd Zainal, 34, claimed trial to receiving RM1,000 in bribes from Wong Cheng Keong on Sept 27 and Oct 25 in 2015.
If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to two years, fined, or both.
Judge Rofiah Mohamad set bail at RM12,000 in one surety and ordered Mohd Alfian to surrender his passport to the court.
She set the case for mention on April 30 and ordered Mohd Alfian to present himself once a month at the nearest Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) office.
MACC prosecutor Michael Joimin had earlier offered bail at RM10,000 for each charge.
However, Mohd Alfian’s lawyer Muhammad Hidir Mustafa pointed out that his client had been cooperative with the MACC.
He also said Mohd Alfian was married with four children aged between one and nine.
Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Department officer Shah Kamil Ghani, 35, claimed trial to three counts of graft involving RM2,000.
He is accused of receiving RM1,000 and RM500 on March 30, 2016 and RM500 on April 1, 2016 as kickbacks from Wong to help the massage parlour get a support letter from the department for an application for a business licence.
If found guilty, Shah Kamil faces 20 years’ jail, a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Mohd Alfian and Shah Kamil were both arrested on March 13, 2017.
Rofiah set bail at RM21,000 in one surety and ordered Shah Kamil to surrender his passport.
She also set April 29 for mention.
At the same time, Rofiah also issued a warrant of arrest against a local town council officer for failing to attend court yesterday.
