SportExcel out to promote junior golf with new tourney

-

KUALA LUMPUR: SportExcel are doing all they can to promote junior golf competitions in the country.

And yesterday, SportExcel, who have been contributing immensely to junior golf for the last 28 years, continued to show their passion for the game when they announced their new tournament - Borneo versus Peninsular Malaysia Junior Match Play, which will be held at the Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort from April 2-3.

The Junior Match Play is made possible with the sponsorship of RM50,000 by Genting Malaysia Berhad.

The tournament will be the first of its kind for junior golf in Malaysia and will be similar to the Ryder Cup with the players playing fourballs, foursome and singles over the two days.

The foursome will create new excitement with boys and girls being paired together.

The Borneo and Peninsular teams will be represented by eight boys and eight girls per team below the age of 19.

SportExcel executive secretary C. Sivanandan said Genting Malaysia’s support would be a great boost to junior golf in Malaysia.

“Genting Malaysia is also our charter member and we thank them for the sponsorship,” said Sivanandan.

“Peninsular team will start as the favourites against the golfers from Sabah and Sarawak. But anything is possible in the competition.

“We are also planning to have the Match Play against our neighbours Thailand and Singapore in future,” he said.

Datuk Marina Chin, who is one of the SportExcel’s board of directors, received a mock cheque of RM50,000 from Datuk Seri Kay, vice-president of Genting Malaysia Berhad yesterday. Kay said: “We are happy to do our part in promoting junior golf as well as fostering goodwill among the juniors from Borneo and Peninsular.

“We want the Junior Match Play to be a success and see more youngsters take up the sport,” she added.
