Shu Wai believes his three Cs formula will take gymnasts far

PETALING JAYA: National coach Ng Shu Wai believes the women’s artistic team can make a big impression at the Philippines SEA Games in December if they follow his formula for success.

He is guiding the girls to perfect their gymnastics routine by emphasing on three things – choosing the right skill, executing the routines without mistakes and performing with confidence.

“I’m looking at the three Cs for them – comfort, complete and confidence,” said the former Asian Games silver medallist.

“For comfort, a gymnast needs to choose a skill, in which they are comfortable and is able to do a routine smoothly without any mistakes.

“Once they are comfortable with the routine, they should look at completing their routines without any drops.

“When they get the first two right, only then can they build up their confidence.”

Shu Wai said the gymnasts won a gold, three silvers and two bronzes at the recent Ukraine International Cup after adapting to his formula.

Farah Ann Abdul Hadi was the darling of the team when she won one gold (uneven bar), one silver (floor exercise) and two bronzes (allaround and team event), while Tan Ing Yueh also impressed with two silvers (balance beam and all-around) and a bronze (team event).

Shu Wai said they were on the right track for the SEA Games.

“Competition in the SEA Games will be fierce as gymnasts from Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines have improved,” said Shu Wai.

“We want to try out new routines in international competitions and get some feedback from the judges before the SEA Games in Manila.”

Shu Wai has lined up five more competitions for the girls. They will compete in the World Cup in China, Singapore Open, Asian Championship in Mongolia, Universiade Games in Italy and the World Championship in Germany.

“The world championship in Stuttgart will be important. Only the top 24 gymnasts from the all-around category get to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo (2020),” he added.
