Wanita Umno chief heads PAC
BARISAN Nasional’s Parit Sulong lawmaker Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad has officially replaced Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman.
This was done after a motion was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong read out the motion, which was passed through a voice vote.
Noraini, who is the country’s first female PAC chairman, said her first task was to chair the probe into the 64 parcels of land sold by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan between 2013 and this year.
She said the Attorney General and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief had confirmed their attendance for the proceedings on April 23.
“This time around, AG Tommy Thomas and MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull will attend,” she said yesterday.
Noraini said it was a huge responsibility to be the head of PAC and hoped that the members would support her leadership.
“As I mentioned earlier, it is not an easy task and cooperation among members are important. And I request for support. We have been working together in PAC since I joined in December and we work very well.
“We leave our parties outside because once we are in, we look at what’s in front of us as cases. In PAC we need consensus and Insya-Allah we will do this together,” she said.
She also confirmed that there would be two replacements in PAC and she would await proposals from the government and the opposition for nominees.
Noraini, who is also Umno Wanita Chief, replaced Kiandee who had left Sabah Umno to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia on March 15.
Opposition MPs had resigned from the PAC pending the replacement of Kiandee as its chairman.
There are 12 PAC members – eight from Pakatan Harapan, two from Barisan, and one each from PAS and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu.
