No good fortune just good old hard work in PKNP’s win

- By K. RAJAN

PETALING JAYA: PKNP assistant coach Chan Wing Hoong said luck had nothing to do with their 1-0 win over Melaka.

In the Super League clash at the Manjung Municipal Council Stadium on Saturday, Melaka defender Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee scored an own goal in the 66th minute.

With the win, PKNP chalked up their fourth successive victory which puts them in seventh spot with 10 points in the 12-team league standings.

Former international Wing Hoong was pleased with his charges.

“It may have been a lucky goal for us but we worked hard to get the three points,” said Wing Hoong.

“I must congratulate the players. They kept their composure and tactical discipline.

“The first 10 minutes we gave away too many corners and freekicks. Melaka’s Safiq Rahim is good with free-kicks and corners and they have Anselmo da Silva who is a good header but we managed to neutralise them as we have been preparing for these situations during training.

“This is our fourth win in a row, we must not get too excited. We need to keep the momentum going as we still have a long way to go,” added Wing Hoong.

PKNP’s next match is an FA Cup third round tie against Police on Tuesday.

Melaka assistant coach Muhammad Nidzam Adha said they were punished for their mistakes.

The Mousedeers, despite their star-studded line-up, are winless in their last four matches and are sixth with 11 points.

“Overall our effort and commitment was good and we created more chances compared to the hosts but we couldn’t find the breakthrough ... silly mistakes let to the own goal which cost us the match,” said the former international.

“We have been losing due to our mistakes.

“We need to double our efforts during training to rectify them. We must buck up.”
