Look into abused maid’s case, A-G told

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The MP whose aide lodged a police report against an employer for allegedly abusing her Indonesian maid, who later died of her injuries, has written to the Attorney-General’s office after the murder charge was dropped.

In a statement, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim said he had contacted the AG to seek clarification after learning of the recent court decision.

“The AG has responded that he will personally investigate and look into the next course of action.

“I trust the AG and the legal system will uphold justice. I reiterate my stand that Malaysia needs a better law to protect migrant workers.

Sim said that if left unchecked, this would impact the local job market negatively, adding that human rights must be protected for everyone, regardless of nationality.

“What is more important is that we have to ensure that such a tragedy will not repeat in this country ever again,” he added.

Indonesian maid Adelina Lisao, 21, died at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital on Feb 11, 2018, after being rescued a day earlier from the house where she was found sleeping on the porch with a Rottweiler.

She had wounds on her body and died of multiple organ failure.

Her employer S. Ambika, 60, was then charged with murdering Adelina at her Taman Kota Permai house in Bukit Mertajam.

It was reported that the High Court granted her a full acquittal on the murder charge after the Deputy Public Prosecutor requested for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal.
