Finalist urges others to take part
MALAYSIA’S sole representative in the Top 50 Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2019 is planning to set up an education service centre for children with special needs.
Dr Muhamad Khairul Anuar Hussin, 40, who lost part of his hearing when he was eight, hopes to provide early intervention and vocational training for our special students.
“I’m raising funds now to realise this vision,” he told StarEdu at the Global Education and Skills Forum 2019 (GESF) in Dubai.
He said the forum provided learning to enhance teacher contribution and education opportunities for special needs children.
“I was able to share and learn about quality education from fellow teachers from around the world. Through the networking sessions, I found new ways to improve.”
The teacher from Taman Universiti 2 Secondary School, Johor Baru, is the seventh Malaysian shortlisted for the prestigious US$1mil (RM4.19mil) award.
Madenjit Singh was the first Malaysian to be in the top 10 list. Yasmin Noorul Amin, Noorjahan Sultan, Vanesri Kasi, Mohd Sirhajwan Idek and K.A. Razhiyah, have made the top 50 since the prize was introduced in 2015.
“I thank God for making it into the top 50. We’re all winners. This is such a huge success for me, my school, and the Education Ministry, because it means my work is recognised internationally.
“I’m not disappointed about not being in the top 10 because just being here has given me the chance to meet some of the world’s best educators,” he said, adding that every teacher is an icon to their students.
“My teacher Noridah Ahmad has guided me since I was seven, and continues to look out for me until today. She’s truly an icon of a teacher.”
He urged Malaysian teachers to give the annual competition for teachers, a shot.
“Think about what you have to offer. Work towards improving the education system. It’s a very satisfying feeling. More than a competition that recognises the role and contributions of teachers, the Global Teacher Prize lets you share ideas with your peers from around the world and learn from them.”
