Help Vivian realise her father’s dreams, says widow

-

SANDAKAN: The wife of the late Sandakan MP Datuk Stephen Wong wasted no time in drumming up support for her daughter.

Addressing the crowd during a ceramah in Dewan SM Yu Yuan on Saturday night, Datin Chong Mee Fook hoped those who had voted for her late husband would also give their support to his daughter.

“When Stephen left on March 28, I could not accept it. He did not only leave the family but all of you (voters). He also left behind a lot of unfinished tasks and aspirations.

“For example, he had wanted to visit the old folks’ home in Kinarut, so my daughters and I went instead and that helped the healing process,” said Chong.

She said many of his visions had yet to be carried out and urged the people, especially voters in the Elopura state constituency, to help realise Stephen’s dreams via Vivian.

“We hope to get good news on May 11 so that my late husband can rest in peace.

“I hope Elopura will remember Stephen’s deeds and continue supporting our daughter,” she added.

Vivian brushed aside concerns raised by the opposition that she was too young and inexperienced.

“At age 22, I joined my dad in DAP when he was still in the opposition. That was eight years ago.

“As a youth, my experience is more than enough,” said Vivian, who spoke in Chinese and Malay.

She also asked the younger generation in the hall to raise their hands, noting that there were not many due to lack of job opportunities.

“But now, we are starting to see a change with the new government. And if you vote for me, you vote for all the youth in Sandakan. You give us the aspiration to help elevate our constituency.

“Do not undermine the youth. We do not judge someone based on race, religion and age.

“We are here to ensure that real change takes place in Sabah and our beloved nation,” she said.

Datuk Liew Vui Keong, a leader from Parti Warisan Sabah who was invited to speak at the ceramah, reminded that Parti Bersatu Sabah candidate Datuk Linda Tsen had lost her Batu Sapi seat during the May 9 polls last year.

“Linda said she is more experienced than Vivian, especially in resolving issues of the people.

“But when she was the MP there, she did not make any changes or development and now she comes here to contest,” he said.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said Vivian was endorsed by Sabah Chief Minister and Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and was the best candidate to represent Sandakan.

“She is confident and able to address the people well. I’m confident that if Vivian wins, she will become one of the best MPs in Sabah, and we in Warisan support DAP as our partner,” he said.

Datuk Frankie Poon, a DAP leader and Tanjung Papat assemblyman, said that if given a chance, Vivian could help boost the local economy.
