Doctors may lose licences for faking MCs

PETALING JAYA: Doctors found to be involved in issuing fake medical certificates can have their licence revoked by the Malaysian Medical Council, says Deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye.

“Medical certificates must be issued by medical practitioners.

“The council can take action against any medical practitioner if they are involved (in the offence).

“They can be suspended or have their licence revoked,” he told reporters after opening a blood donation campaign by PJ Kwan Inn Teng Buddhist temple here yesterday.

Dr Lee was referring to the arrest of six people who were allegedly involved in a syndicate selling fake MCs after police raided three houses in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

The police found 216 doctor’s stamps, 4,631 MC slips, 257 MC booklets and receipt books after crippling the syndicate, which has been active since 2017.

To a question, Dr Lee said that any doctor whose credentials were misused to issue fake MCs should report the issue to the ministry and police.

“If a doctor issues an MC without examining the patient, we will take action.

“But if an MC is issued without the knowledge of the doctor and this is proven then it is falsification and no action will be taken against the doctor,” he said, adding that this would come under police investigation.

“At the ministry level, we need to ascertain that a doctor was not part of the syndicate.”

He said there had been no complaints so far from doctors about their credentials being misused.
