Malaysians use social media to recapture GE14 euphoria

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians took to social media such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to recollect and cherish their experience of voting in the 14th General Election, which saw the Pakatan Harapan coalition’s historic win, paving its way to Putrajaya.

The top three hashtags that were trending on Twitter were #MalaysiaBaharu, #GE14 and #SelamatHariRakyat.

Almost all the posts related to the Pakatan Harapan government’s first-year anniversary were either accompanied by pictures of their inked fingernail from last year or family, friends who voted together as well as that of Dr Mahathir.

They also thanked Dr Mahathir for making a comeback to right the wrong.

“@chedetofficial. Tun, God bless u. Thanks for whatever you have done for us. Happy anniversary,” said @selvan9168.

His tweet was accompanied by a picture of his two kids.

On Instagram, famous Chef Wan’s post on Dr Mahathir received 14,632 likes.

“He is indeed our Msian Hero! Saving this country from bankruptcy!” said the inimitable chef whose real name is Redzuawan Ismail.

“Yes, we might not have a perfect government to turn around so quickly our economy after what UMNO rule has done previously but indeed we are always better than having a corrupt government that steals everything from its Rakyat that bring shame to orang2 Melayu, Agama dan Negara!

“Enough is enough! Now it’s time for all of us to be united as one new Malaysia rebuilt our nation dan tebus maruah diri kita!” he posted, accompanied by Dr Mahathir’s picture that has the tagline, “He is not perfect but he is limited edition. He is Tun Mahathir.”

“Happy anniversary to #MalaysiaBaharu! I remain inspired by that spectacular and monumental change a year ago, delivered by Malaysians across the ethnic divide, peacefully!

“Despite the bumpy ride thru the months, we will build, and shape this Nation of ours, slowly but surely!!” said Cynthia Gabriel on Twitter.

“This is 9th May. I will remember this date forever. Glad to be part of history,” said another person who goes by the Twitter account @saufi. co.

“Salam #MalaysiaBaharu! It’s a gorgeous day, 1 year on.

“Malaysia on the right track – institutions are being reformed, rule of law back in place, less corruption & abuse of power, major scandals 1MDB, FELDA, Tabung Haji etc sorted & more civil liberties,” said Eric Paulsen, Malaysia’s representative to the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights on the micro-blogging site. — Bernama
