PETALING JAYA: It’s the holy month of Ramadan and two charitable bodies are looking for volunteers to help out with their noble objectives.

Persatuan Untuk Anak Kita, which has been focusing on helping the poor, is now turning its sights on the hardcore poor deaf.

Social activist Syed Azmi Alhabshi said the NGO decided to try out something different this time by focusing on this group of underprivileged people.

“There are 488 eligible recipients from nine states on the list given to us by the Malaysia Federation of the Deaf which excludes Sabah, Sarawak and Perlis.

“We need volunteers from the nine states to help with groceries and cash contributions in aid of this group of underprivileged people,’’ he said.

Syed Azmi said people could contribute any amount of cash and whatever they were able to give.

“The volunteers will have to visit the recipients’ homes in their chosen states. If possible, we prefer the volunteers to also bring along their families when they visit the recipients because we want to make a connection.

“Besides giving contributions, the volunteers will also raise money for the sign language interpreters who will help them communicate with the deaf,” he said.

The states with the most number of hardcore poor deaf are Terengganu and Kelantan, with 157 and 123 eligible recipients respectively, Syed Azmi said.

The Tiny Gold Hearts Project, a charity and social initiative by a group of individuals to raise funds for heart surgery for refugee kids in Malaysia, is selling heart pins.

Hasan Al-Akraa said it was looking for volunteers to take boxes of heart pins to sell at events, schools, cafes and restaurants to raise funds for such surgeries.

One pin sells for RM20, two at RM50 and three at RM100. The body said each ailing child needed about RM50,000 for heart surgery and treatment.

“All proceeds will go to the Tiny Gold Hearts Project in aid of the heart surgeries. We still have a few more children in need of the surgery,” he said.

In Kuantan, lawyer Datuk Syed Azimal Amir Syed Abu Bakar will start his annual Free Food for Ramadan programme on Monday.

The programme kicked off during Ramadan 2015 with Syed Azimal and friends distributing 50 packets of food daily.

“This year we will give out between 200 and 300 packets of food,” he said, adding that even non-Muslims would benefit.

Food will be distributed at the Taman Esplanade Kuantan from 5.30pm daily till the end of Ramadan.

“Everything started when I was performing the haj in 2014. While in Mecca, I found that it was easy to do good. It does not have to be anything big.

“So I came back and started distributing 20 packets of nasi lemak during the weekends around the town area,” said Syed Azimal, who can be contacted at 011-1073 0969.
