Dr M: Good policemen have nothing to worry about

PUTRAJAYA: Police personnel with no misdeed need not worry about the soon-to-be set up Independent Police Complaints Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“Those who do not commit any wrongdoing, I believe they have nothing to worry about.

“The IPCMC will not only restore the image of the police; I’m confident the commission will also defend their welfare,” he said after chairing the Special Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption meeting yesterday.

The Prime Minister was pleased that the objection to the setting up of IPCMC had been resolved.

He congratulated the National Governance Integrity and AntiCorruption Centre (GIACC) and Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador for explaining the issue to the representatives of police associations.

“I am grateful this has been resolved,” he said.

The IPCMC looks set to be a reality following positive discussions between the police and the GIACC.

It is a police oversight body that investigates police misconduct.

Recently-retired IGP Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun had prior to this said the police were against the move to set up the IPCMC.

On another matter, Dr Mahathir said the government was depending on the media to report positivelyon the economy and the country’ s other achievements.

“It is a good country to invest money in but great experts read in the press that Malaysia is very bad, as if we are going through a war.

“But actually we are performing well and investments are coming in.

“Please report the truth, not fake news,” he said.

Dr Mahathir was responding to a wire report that global funds are bypassing the country in favour of other markets and that investors are losing patience.

The Prime Minister, who was asked on whether the government would look into declassifying the May 13, 1969 racial riots official report, said that it would look into the calls.
