Olusegun makes dream start in Giants’ win but Sathia’s far from pleased
PETALING JAYA: It was a sweet Super League homecoming for Selangor’s new signing Ifedayo Olusegun as he fired a hattrick as the Red Giants overpowered Kedah 3-1.
The Nigerian scored in the 34th, 44th and 57th minutes before Kedah reduced the deficit through Fernando Rodriguez in the 64th at the Shah Alam Stadium on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old Olusegun attributed the win and his dream debut to excellent team work.
“This win is a result of good team work,” said Olusegun, who featured for Felda United (2017) and Melaka (2018), scoring a total of 15 goals in 18 appearances in the Super League.
“It’s just normal for me to work with coach B. Sathianathan, he’s someone who I know and it’s the same with some of the players here who I know and played with before ... it’s like coming back home.”
The win saw Selangor overtake Kedah and move to third spot in the 12-team Super League with 21 points, two more than the Red Eagles who dropped to fourth with 19 points.
Despite the comfortable win, Selangor coach Sathianathan is peeved that his men failed to keep a clean sheet and failed to score more goals.
“We could have scored six or seven goals in this game. We had so many chances to score from counter-attacks,” said the former national team coach.
“Not keeping a clean sheet is a concern for me, we conceded when we were leading comfortably.
“If our players were more focused, we could have got a better result.
“Ifedayo is a player who I know well, and he actually can play much better. I want him to play better when we don’t have possession ... I also don’t want the team to rely too much on him for the goals.”
