> A video of a tapir wandering around in Taman Pertang in Jelebu, Negri Sembilan, has gone viral on WhatsApp, reported Harian Metro.

State Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director Wan Mat Wan Harun urged residents not to hurt the animal, adding that its officers would be sent out to track down the animal.

“If it is true that it is lost in the area, we will ensure that the animal is returned to its habitat,” he said, adding that the tapir is believed to have wandered into the area in search of food.

He reminded the public that tapirs are protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, making it an offence to injure or hunt the animal.

A resident, who wanted to be known as Wong, 52, said he was shocked to see the tapir running past his house.

He said its habitat in the forest of Pertang could be threatened, forcing the animal to look for food elsewhere.
