KUALA LUMPUR: There was no cheer for Savinder Kaur (pic) despite winning the 800m gold medal at the Thailand Open Track and Field Championships.

The Selangor athlete, who underwent a 40-day training stint in Kenya, clocked a season best 2:14.13 but her efforts was off her personal best of 2:11.95.

Understandably, the 22-year-old was not pleased with her effort.

“Although I won I’m not satisfied with my time. I failed to come close to my personal best as there was no stiff competition,” said Savinder, who forked out RM8,000 to train in Kenya.

“I have to train harder if I hope to qualify for the SEA Games in November. I also need to compete in more competitions.”

Malaysia bagged another gold through Norliyana Kamaruddin in the heptathlon.

The 28-year-old from Negri Sembilan bagged 5,012 points from the seven events.

She won the high jump (991 points), shot putt (583 points), long jump (709 points) and 800m (714 points) and finished second in the 100m hurdles (754 points).

She was third in the 200m (745 points) and fourth in the javelin (516 points).

But her efforts was short of her national record of 5,247 points which she did at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.

Malaysia also won a silver and two bronze medals in the second day of the meet.

Nurul Faizah Asma Mazlan clocked 57.44 to come in second in the 400m.

Sprinter Muhd Aqil Yasmin posted 21.38 to bag the bronze in the 200m while Royson Vincent also came in third in the 800m (1:52.66).

National para athlete Abdul Latif Romly leapt 7.49m to finish fifth in the long jump while able-bodied Luqman Hakim Ramlan came in seventh with 7.32m.

High jumper Yap Sean Yee had a disappointing outing when she ended in sixth place with 1.70m.

The SEA Games silver medallist’s effort was way off her national record of 1.83m.
