Artistic gymnast Tan Ing Yueh bags silver for her second World Cup medal.

Success begets PETALING JAYA: success.

That seems to be the case with talented Malaysian Tan Ing Yueh (pic) who is turning in eye-popping displays despite the presence of the mighty Chinese in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Zhaoqing, China.

After bagging a bronze medal in the vault event on Monday, the 22-year-old lass from Melaka went one better yesterday by bagging a silver medal in the floor exercise routine on the last day of the meet.

Favourite Liu Jingxing danced her way to the gold with 12.950 points while Ing Yueh had 12.900 and Eom Dohyun of South Korea took bronze on 12.400.

Winning the bronze and silver may not seem huge deals considering that she delivered Malaysia’s first gold medal in the same meet in the women’s balance beam event in 2016 – in the absence of Chinese gymnasts.

However, facing the Chinese might and finishing so close behind Jingxing in the floor exercise speaks volumes of Ing Yueh’s ability. The achievements in Zhaoqing will surely stand her in good stead for the Manila SEA Games which will be held from Nov 30-Dec 11.

With qualification to Tokyo for the Olympics next year also on her mind, her achievements in China would mean greater expectations for her to do better in her upcoming tournaments – Singapore Open, Asian Championships in Mongolia, Universiade Games in Italy and the World Championships in Germany.

Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) president Rachel Lau is proud to see Ing Yueh improving her performances and hopes to see more success from her in the future.

“She is making the country proud by proving that we can compete with world-class gymnasts,” said Rachel.

“It’s her years of dedication that is paying off. We hope to see her make an impact on the international stage.”

Another Malaysian Farah Ann Abdul Hadi finished last in the floor exercise with 10.850 points.

In the balance beam event, Farah Ann was placed sixth among eight gymnasts with 11.400 points.

China’s Li Shijia won gold with an impressive score of 15.050, followed by her compatriot Yin Sisi (13.850) and South Korea’s Dohyun with 12.300 points.

Chongqing is the first of seven Challenge Cup events, but the Malaysian contingent will only take part in this competition for 2019.
