PETALING JAYA: The e-commerce component is now inseparable from business operations, with a rising trend of companies establishing their digital presence to cater to consumers.

Among the homegrown brands riding the wave is Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd, which recently kickstarted its online shopping component.

Its managing director Datuk Dr Ameer Ali Mydin will be sharing the hypermarket chain’s experience at the upcoming SME Thought Leadership Tea Talk #2 on Sept 24 at Menara Star, Petaling Jaya.

Titled Why You Need to Embark on EBusiness Today, the half-day-event will focus on raising awareness on e-commerce and the best ways for SMEs to capitalise on such technology to thrive and remain competitive.

Establishing an e-commerce element in business is never easy, but the complexity increases for larger companies. As such, SMEs that attend the event can learn from Mydin’s journey on the virtual path.

Mydin, which recently opened its first hypermarket spanning 18,300sq m in Sandakan, Sabah, is embarking on e-business for growth and mileage.

The move will pave the way towards sustainability for the local retail champion as it supports some 8,000 employees in more than 60 outlets nationwide.

Through Ameer’s session, SMEs can find out more about the opportunities, challenges and lessons Mydin picked up along the way to establish best practices in their own companies, as well as minimise pitfalls and avoid expensive mistakes.

While e-business is a key element in boosting SME competitiveness, the business case for it is also strong, as smaller companies need to diversify their sales channels in order to provide a seamless experience for the consumers of today.

To do so, there are a number of tools in the market that SMEs can use, and this area will be covered by Shopmatic chief product officer Roberto Kauffmann.

Aside from insights into current e-commerce trends and developments, event participants can tap into Kauffmann’s expertise to learn how to manage both their online and offline business operations for growth and impact.

Kauffmann, who has over 27 years of global leadership experience in business and technology, is best positioned to speak on how SMEs can leverage current tools to build online businesses.

During the event, he will be able to provide companies with a quick-start guide on building their online business from the ground-up, which is where Shopmatic and its supporting ecosystem come in.

The industry expert, who is passionate about e-commerce and fintech in emerging markets, will also be present to field questions concerning e-commerce from attendees.

Founded in 2014, Shopmatic is part of the digital wave enabling companies across multiple markets to successfully set up their businesses online to cater to the fast-changing worldwide consumer behaviour.

In addition to the sharing sessions, there will be a networking session to enable SME entrepreneurs to discuss potential collaborations or partnerships or keep up-to-date with current developments.

Tea Talk #2 will be held from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Admission is RM30 per person, with registration at bit.ly/tlsteatalk2.

Created as a platform for dialogue and learning within the business fraternity, the SME Thought Leadership series is aimed at dissecting emerging business issues and identifying opportunities that can be leveraged to grow businesses.

The SME Thought Leadership 2019 series is organised by the Star Media Group and presented by CIMB Bank Bhd.
