Aaron-Wooi Yik plead for patience from demanding fans

-

PETALING JAYA: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik want badminton fans to be a little more patient with them as they look to fulfil their potential.

The doubles pair have been under the spotlight since their surprise quarter-final outing at the World Championships in Nanjing, China, last year and when they finished as the All-England runners-up in March.

But the world No. 14 pair have also shown their vulnerability when they were stunned by Japan’s 22nd ranked Takuto Inoue-Yuki Kaneko in the second round at the World Championship in Switzerland in August.

Last month, they played in three back-to-back tournaments. They managed to reach the quarter-finals at the Taiwan Open but fell in the opening rounds at the China and Korean Opens.

“We know everyone is expecting big things from us after our AllEngland feat. Results wise, it has not been good since then despite we giving our best,” said Wooi Yik.

“The rough patch is a process that we are going through at the moment and we hope our fans will understand. It will end soon, just be a bit patient.

“The losses have given us more experience and have made us wiser and tougher. We hope to show it in Denmark.”

The pair will be competing in their maiden Denmark Open in Odense which starts today.

But the draw has not been favourable as they open their campaign against familiar foes, teammates and world No. 21 Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi.

And in the second round, they may be be up against another Malaysian pair and world No. 10 Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong or world No. 2 Mohammad AhsanHendra Setiawan of Indonesia.

“After two defeats in the first round, it’s important that we bounce back and make a deep run here.

“But it’s always tough against Yew Sin-Ee Yi, it’s 50-50 as we know each other’s game well, hopefully we’ll get through.

“We don’t mind taking on V Shem-Wee Kiong or Ahsan-Hendra because we can learn so much from them. If we are pitted against the Indonesians, we’ll be highly motivated to seek revenge after losing to them in the All-England final.”
