Don’t lose face

-

Call it a “kiasu” battle. Malaysia’s shuttlers are already dreading an unimaginable defeat to Singapore in the SEA Games men’s team event. In the draw released, second seeds Malaysia – led by Lee Zii Jia (pic) – face a possible clash against the Lion City in the semi-finals of the men’s team event at the biennial Games in the Philippines from Nov 30-Dec 11.

PETALING JAYA: Singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei has successfully undergone a colectomy surgery.

The procedure, which saw part of her colon removed, was done on Monday and she is expected to be out for four months.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria said the 19-year-old was in good spirits when he visited her at the hospital yesterday.

“We ask for everyone to allow her as much privacy and space as possible. I’m certain that she will come back stronger than ever,” said Norza.

Jin Wei has been struggling with the ailment since the start of the year and it has kept her out of action since June.

Her absence means she will not be defending the gold medal at the Philippines SEA Games next month and will be out of contention for a spot at next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games.

“She was quite weak and in pain after the operation, but has since got better. Most likely she will remain at the hospital for at least another week before she can be discharged,” added Norza.

Meanwhile, Jin Wei posted on Instagram, where she has more than 37,000 followers, saying: “A pain that I will never ever forget.”
