New rule for foreign plastic

Firms wanting to export here must get nod from own country

PETALING JAYA: The government will be imposing a new additional condition on foreign companies wanting to export plastic to the country next year.

These companies would need to get the support from their own government before exporting the plastic to Malaysia, said Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

“Next year, we will impose another additional condition whereby companies wishing to export plastic to Malaysia will need recommendations from the country of origin.

“This condition is made to ensure they will be more responsible,” she said, adding that this was done to prevent the foreign companies from misusing government facilities.

Speaking to reporters after launching the Be Green and Water for Life programmes by Petronas here yesterday, Zuraida also asked the state governments to look into a suitable threshold for the sale of properties to foreigners.

The RM600,000 announced under the Budget 2020 was merely a guide.

“It’s a suggestion by the Finance Minister due to the overhang of unsold properties. So, I ask the state governments to consider the most suitable ceiling price because they have the power to and also because this differs from one state to the next.

“For example, it’s not the same for Johor or Perak. They have their own ceiling price,” she said.

Also present at the event -- aimed at cultivating community awareness on keeping Sungai Langat clean -- was Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd managing director Datuk Sazali Hamzah and Yayasan Petronas board director Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang.

During the function, over 500 volunteers comprising the local community, students and Petronas staff, helped picked up trash from the river, as well as plant trees. — Bernama
