PENAMPANG: SM St Michael here has successfully made it to the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for an amazing 10th time for making the most number of pots from recycled materials.

A total of 1,588 multipurpose pots were created from recycled detergent bottles.

The project, which took about four months to complete since it began on June 25, was a collaborative effort by some 900 students and their parents, 61 teachers and eight non-teaching staff members, and over 100 Kampung Terawi community members.

School principal Jennifer Asing said the project was aimed at instilling love for the environment and to promote responsibility by encouraging people to recycle.

“The pots can be used to hold plant pots or plant flowers.

“Some of the pots will be kept at our school, while the others will be donated to the Kampung Terawi community and we will sell a number of them,” she said during the MBOR launch programme yesterday.

Previously, the school created records for taking part in the longest riverbank clean-up (2007), producing the most number of flower pots made from coconut shells (2008), making the most number of coin boxes from newspapers (2010) and creating the most number of fridge magnets made from recyclable materials (2015).

State Assistant Education and Innovation Minister Jenifer Lasimbang said the success of SM St Michael was a testament of the school’s efforts to promote responsibility towards the environment in addition to ensuring academic excellence.

“The school managed to instil good habits among its students, and this is something that is talked about by other schools.

“When I visited other schools, the school management asked me about the secret of SM St Michael’s success as I am from Penampang.

“I believe that leadership is important, beginning from the school principal to the teachers, and with support from the school board and the parent-teacher association,” said Lasimbang.
