Marquez sets another MotoGP record after stunning comeback
MARC Marquez missed out on his 12th win of the season but the Spaniard will leave Malaysia with a milestone achievement.
Despite starting from his lowest grid position since the Italian GP in 2015 after crashing in qualifying on Saturday, the 2019 world champion notched up another MotoGP record for scoring the most points in a season.
Marquez surpassed Jorge Lorenzo’s premier class points record of 383, thanks to his second place finish at the Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix in Sepang yesterday.
It was yet another stunning performance from the six-time premier class world champion, who now moves onto 395 points with the final round in Valencia to come in two weeks time.
Marquez now sits 139 points ahead of nearest rival Andrea Dovizioso of Italy in the overall standings.
“I watched the video from Mugello (2015) last night and I evaluated what I needed to do from the back of the grid.
“It was an incredible race, a great first lap. Maybe the best of my career,” he said of his move at the start of the race from 11th to second.
“It was a very nice first lap but unfortunately, the tyre dropped a lot in those first three laps and I lost a little time.
“I’m happy with my race, but you can’t imagine how happy I am for my brother’s victory (Alex) – he deserves it so much.
“It’s an incredible day but we also have to remember Afridza Munandar, a young and talented rider who we unfortunately lost. A big hug to his family and friends.”
