PEKAN NENAS: It is not true that Gerakan received RM1mil from Pakatan Harapan to contest in the Tanjung Piai polls to split Chinese votes from Barisan Nasional, says party president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau.

He said he needed to make this clear as many members of the public he had met during campaigning were claiming that the party had received RM1mil from Pakatan.

Lau added that political opponents should not resort to spreading rumours.

“If we did receive RM1mil, we would be able to put up many banners, flags and posters across Tanjung Piai.

“All parties contesting in the by-election should campaign fairly,” he said at a press conference held at the party operations centre here yesterday.

Lau also denied claims that 1,000 Gerakan members from three branches in Tanjung Piai were purportedly resigning next week in protest over the party’s decision to contest in the by-election.

“I checked with the Gerakan Johor chairman and he said that the division has no more than 100 members. How come there are 1,000 members?” he asked.

Lau also suspected that there were elements of sabotage in Gerakan’s campaign.

“Our main task over these two weeks is to get people to believe that a third force is needed and that we can be an alternative voice.

“We will leave it to the rakyat to make a decision and vote wisely,” he added.

Gerakan candidate Wendy Subramaniam, who was also present at the press conference, said political opponents should refrain from resorting to personal attacks.

She was referring to a viral picture on Facebook depicting an edited picture of her being a puppet of Pakatan.

“Women are not puppets. We have our own ideas and we can be leaders too,” she said.
