RM15mil in donations help vernacular education yearly
THE Chinese community spends more than RM15mil every year subsidising vernacular education, according to the Malaysian Federation of Alumni Association of Taiwan Universities.
Nanyang Siang Pau quoted its president Datuk Lawrence Ting Siew Haw as saying that this was a heavy burden on the community and he hoped that the new generation would appreciate the struggle to preserve Chinese education in Malaysia.
Speaking after an event at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman on Saturday, Ting said Malaysians should be proud that Chinese education had more than 200 years of history in the country, with more than 60 independent schools.
He said as the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) qualification was not recognised in
Malaysia, many graduates ended up pursuing their undergraduate studies in Taiwan.
“90% of teachers in independent schools are Taiwan graduates. The reason why independent schools are doing so well is largely due to the graduates from Taiwan,” he said, adding that all this was not possible without the donations from the Chinese community throughout the years.

The 44-year-old Lin and 38-yearold Japanese singer Akira’s wedding reception was held yesterday in Tainan, Taiwan, where Lin’s parents lived.
