Malaysians need to be disciplined
I WOULD like to ask local authority officials throughout Malaysia if any of them has seen people drinking alcohol in parks and playgrounds in broad daylight. I have, and I believe many who are reading this would have too.
Who are to be blamed for allowing parks and playgrounds to be used for this antisocial behaviour? The people who do it or the authorities who do not take action to stop it? I would say both.
People who want to drink alcohol should do so at premises that are licensed to sell alcohol or in their own homes. These people drink until they get so drunk and then leave their empty cans, bottles and other rubbish strewn all over the place. I have even seen them easing themselves among the bushes and plants.
They also become very loud and are a nuisance in the parks and playgrounds which are visited by children.
I would like to propose that all local authorities start taking steps to curb this problem, working hand in hand with the police. Perhaps our local authorities should study how Singapore is enforcing its Liquor Control Act (Supply and Consumption).
On another note, we are just weeks away from Visit Malaysia 2020, but there are still many things that I as a Malaysian would not want our visitors to see or experience. The following are just a few:
a. dirty public toilets especially in eateries, petrol stations and malls;
b. traffic offenders especially motorcyclists who break the law at every opportunity, making the roads unsafe not only to other motorists but also pedestrians; and
c. roads pitted with potholes that are getting bigger and more hazardous.
Malaysia is a beautiful country with amazing people, but we still need to inculcate some basic discipline. The authorities need to play their part too.
