KUALA TERENGGANU: With school reopening about a week away, civil servant Syarifah Noraida Syed Izzudin, 41, has chosen to go online to buy the uniform needed by her eldest child to start Year One next year.

There are plenty of choices and it is inexpensive, she said.

“Besides this, I don’t have to wear myself out looking for uniforms.

“There are baju kurung priced at RM12 with the quality on par with what you get elsewhere.

“The only downside is you can’t try it on. But if it doesn’t fit, some traders allow exchanges,” she said here yesterday.

Scores of parents were busy shopping yesterday for school essentials, with uniforms priced between RM13 and RM33, schoolbags priced between RM13 and RM130 and shoes priced between RM30 and RM50.

Haliza Kamaruddin, 38, a housewife, said she has allocated RM150 to RM200 for each of her three children aged eight to 16 years old and decided to get their school essentials from shops in the village to support small traders.

“The prices are not that expensive as the bigger stores. This way I get to help local businesses.

“I’m getting the children two sets of uniforms each, plus shoes and schoolbags. The girl’s uniform is cheaper than the boy’s,” she said.

Private sector worker Muhammad Imran Yunus, 58, said parents nowadays have to start saving

early because school essentials are more expensive now compared to the past.

He has allocated almost RM1,000 for his three children aged 10 to 16, which includes sportswear.

“This doesn’t even include the uniforms for their co-curricular activities yet. For me, it’s OK if it’s pricey as long as it’s good quality because they will be using it for a year,” he said. — Bernama
