KUALA LUMPUR: Throngs of people headed to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) headquarters on the first day the department resumed operations.

A check by The Star yesterday showed that the counters were swarming with people from the moment they opened at 8am.

KL JPJ director Mohd Zaki Ismail said customers went through temperature screenings before they were permitted to enter the headquarters’ main entrance.

“They were also required to wear face masks, sanitise their hands and observe social distancing,” he said yesterday.

“Only healthy customers and those who adhered to the SOP were allowed to conduct transactions at the counters,” he added.

Zaki reminded the public not to panic and storm any JPJ counter or office.

“Private vehicle owners will still enjoy an exemption for renewal charges of driving and motorcycle licences during the movement control order (MCO) period on condition their insurance coverage is still valid.

“I hope the people will refrain from panicking and understand the exemptions given by the department,” Zaki said.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had previously announced that JPJ will resume operations for all its services, including those offered at Pos

Malaysia branches, on May 18.

“JPJ will also operate seven days a week to allow backlogged matters to be settled as soon as possible to avoid congestion of existing individual and commercial clients. This will continue until further notice,” he said.

JPJ will operate from 8am to 4pm on weekdays, and from 8am to 1pm on weekends. The 8am to 1pm operating hours will apply to states that observe Friday and Saturday as weekends.

Cash payments at JPJ branches will only be allowed between 8am and 11am, while non-cash options are accepted at all times.

JPJ counters will be closed for Hari Raya Aidilfitri from May 23 to 26, with operations resuming May 27.
