Flash floods ruin Raya preparations

- rena@thestar.com.my By RENA LIM BUTTERWORTH:

Forty residents from 14 families had their Hari Raya Aidilfitri preparations disrupted by flash floods just days before the festive period here in Kampung Sethu in Sungai Jawi.

Housewife Nadiah Abdullah, 29, said the floods devastated her family’s preparations for the upcoming Hari Raya.

“We cleaned the house, got our decorations ready and started preparing for Hari Raya but now everything is dirty.

“As we did not expect the floods to be this bad, our furniture and many other items were damaged before we could save them.

“Although we did prop up things like our television, refrigerator, washing machine and sofa, everything else was damaged.

“Now we have to wash the whole house and all the items stained by floodwaters as everything smells so bad,” she said at her home yesterday.

Another victim, housewife Noor Azni Md Noor, 54, said her family was also affected by the flood.

“We were caught by surprise this time. As the heavy rain started late in the afternoon, we were expecting a flood soon after but it did not happen so we thought it should be okay,” she said.

“Suddenly, water came gushing in when we were preparing for our buka puasa and soon, we were all knee-deep in water.

“Most of our furniture and items were drenched and we were only able to salvage our electronics.

“Now that the water has subsided, we are expecting days of cleaning before we can go back to preparing for Raya again,” she added when met at a shelter at SMK Jawi.

Noor Azni added that she and her family had not rested properly since Sunday night.

“During the floods, we waited until midnight before the rescue boats reached us and many other families were in similar situations.

“When we left our homes on Sunday, the water came up to chest level,” she said.
