ALOR SETAR: Soon after he assumed the Kedah Mentri Besar duties, the very first thing that Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor did was to thank his parents and family.

He knelt and kissed the hands of his father Md Nor Taib, 79, and mother Meriam Ahmad, 70, during a special ceremony at Kedah PAS Complex in Kota Sarang Samut on Sunday.

Meriam said her son had always been interested in politics from his younger days, adding that he pursued a bachelor’s degree in political science at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang.

“He is a strict and outspoken person. I hope he will fulfil his responsibility as the Mentri Besar in leading the state to greater heights,” she said.

Sanusi, 46, was sworn in as the 14th Mentri Besar of Kedah by Sultan Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah on Sunday.

The Jeneri assemblyman and Kedah PAS deputy commissioner succeeded Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir who stepped down after conceding that he had lost the majority support among assemblymen in the state.

Sanusi’s wife Jusmalailani Jusoh expects her husband to be busier than usual.

“As Jeneri assemblyman, he has always been busy with his responsibilities,” said Jusmalailani, a teacher.

She, however, believes that he can juggle his time efficiently between family and politics.

Sanusi clocked in for his first day at work at Block A of Wisma Darul Aman here yesterday.

His principal private secretary Datuk Armishah Siraj and his deputy Ahmad Emir Rastan Badderudin welcomed him.

He then met with various department heads and staff members.

Speaking to reporters, Sanusi described the Mentri Besar’s office as a familiar sight to him.

This was because he was the then political secretary to the late Kedah mentri besar Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak from 2008 to 2013.

“The feel is still the same, except with some minor adjustment to the room setting.

“It has evoked a sense of nostalgia during my time as the political secretary to Azizan.

“I’ll do my best for Kedah and its people,” he said.
