Unhappy with a group of strangers interfering in a family dispute, a riot involving at least 30 people broke out at a public flat in Jalan Ipoh here.

City police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the incident occurred at around 10.50pm on Friday.

“We received a distress call about a ruckus involving at least 30 Indians and Malays there.

“We rushed to the scene and broke up the fight and began our investigations,” he said yesterday.

He said the cause of the incident was over a misunderstanding.

“Initially a group of 10 Indian men were fighting over a family matter. “A fight broke out between them. “Then a group of Malay men got involved after they tried to break up the fight. “They (first group) were dissatisfied that outsiders were interfering in a family issue,” he said, adding that this led to a shoving match which resulted in a fight.

During the incident, at least 10 vehicles in the area were rammed by one of the suspects’ vehicle.

“We have yet to receive police reports from the vehicle owners.

“We managed to arrest 13 Malay men and seven Indian men aged between 17 and 33.

“One of them suffered minor injuries to his fingers,” he said, adding that police had classified the case as rioting and remanded all the suspects for four days.

Comm Mazlan said police were now tracking down other suspects who were still at large.

“Hari Raya Aidilfitri is just around the corner, and we are also facing the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Let us all take care of the harmony of our diverse community so that we can live together peacefully,” he said, urging anyone with information to call the police at 03-2115 9999.
