Suspected drunk driver in rampage remanded

Police have been granted a five-day remand for the driver who allegedly crashed his pick-up truck into five people at a hawkers’ site at Pekan Bukit Sentosa in Kuala Lumpur.

Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said the suspect had been remanded for five days to facilitate investigat­ion.

The 32-year-old suspect, who worked as a tyre wholesaler, is believed to have been drunk when the accident occurred at about 6.35pm on Friday.

Five people were injured.

The man does not have a criminal record and the case is being probed under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police have advised the public not to make any negative assumption­s about the incident and assured them that the authoritie­s would conduct a thorough investigat­ion.

On Friday, Bernama quoted Hulu Selangor OCPD Supt Arsad Kamaruddin as saying that the suspect was enraged when a passer-by knocked the side mirror of his car when he sounded his horn to go through the congested road near Jalan Besar Bukit Sentosa.

“The man said he would ram into everybody in Bukit Sentosa, and he did, into five people at the Persiaran Orkid hawkers’ site,” he said.

He said four men and a woman, aged between 40 and 50, were injured.

Two cars, two motorcycle­s and two canopies were also damaged.

Videos of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed a four-wheel drive vehicle crashing into stalls and people at the hawkers’ site.

The suspect said he would ram into everybody in Bukit Sentosa and he did, injuring four men and a woman.
