Technology as an enabler for TAR UC
THE movement control order (MCO) is no excuse to slow down the learning process.
Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) Faculty of Computing and Information Technology lecturers are taking advantage of various online platforms to keep their students engaged and motivated to learn.
Teh Lee Wah and Ong Mor Yang conducted a briefing on a video conference platform for Diploma in Accounting, Diploma in Business Administration and Bachelor of Retail Management students who are taking the Managing Information Systems course.
The briefing, to guide students on how to submit a standardised e-assessment for the exams, saw the participation of 900 students.
“Through Google Classroom ,we can create classes, distribute assignments and assess students’ work and send them feedback. It’s a convenient, one-stop solution for educators,” Ong said.
Teh, who has been uploading her own pre-recorded lecture videos on the platform, has also been posting quizzes, exercises and learning materials on the platform so that her students can still learn effectively despite the MCO.
“I also teach the Management Information Systems course, and since the class size is small, I use Google Meet to conduct my lectures, tutorials and practicals.”
During tutorials, students take turns to present their answers and discussions are done interactively while she demonstrates the steps during practicals.
Students share a screenshot with her when they face problems, which then allows her to guide them.
“Participation is 100% for every online session and even for extra classes,” Teh said.
Technology, Ong said, is an education enabler and can effectively convey lessons just as well as conventional teaching methods.
“Where there is a will to learn, there will always be a way. We are fortunate that TAR UC provides all the necessary support for us to educate students effectively through e-learning platforms,” he added.
