Liow thanks M’sians for donating to TAR UC
PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has thanked all Malaysians for their donations to the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) when it faced massive funding cuts under the previous Pakatan Harapan government.
Thanking those who stood by the university, the TAR UC board of governors chairman said over RM2mil was raised by the MCA-led fundraising campaign to help the institution after its funding was cut.
He assured the public that the funds would be used effectively, especially in subsidising fees for deserving students whose families were affected by the current economic and financial circumstances.
“The various races in the country witnessed hawkers, meat sellers, traders, organisations and many others sincerely contributing their hard-earned earnings to this institution.
“This is because they saw that TAR UC has genuinely provided quality and affordable education for many Malaysians, especially those from the lower income group who would otherwise have not been able to pursue their tertiary education.
“They are the unsung heroes and we are very thankful to them.
“On behalf of TAR UC, I would like to place on record our deep appreciation for that wonderful gesture from the Malaysian public from all walks of life and to MCA for mobilising its nationwide resources to assist the fundraising exercise since October last year,” he posted on Facebook on Sunday.
TAR UC, said Liow, would continue to provide quality and affordable education, as well as welcome contributions and support from the public.
“Education is a long-term sustenance for our nation’s growth and development.
“For TAR UC to continue its mission and vision in developing human capital for the country, we need public support along the way,” he said.
Such support, he added, would go a long way towards providing quality and affordable education for future generations.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong announced last Wednesday that TAR UC would be obtaining RM58mil from the Finance Ministry for this year, adding that the allocation would no longer be channelled through any third party.
The fund includes the remaining RM18mil (of the RM40mil) government allocation that was previously allocated to an entity called the TAR Alumni Association and another RM40mil from the government under Budget 2020.
