Focus on position and feel

-

FOR a Tour tip, here’s one that focuses on your positions in the swing – where the club needs to be at certain key points such as halfway back, at the top of the swing, halfway down, at impact, in the follow-through and the finish.

You should know where the centre of gravity is and whether the club in your hands is inside or outside the line, and whether it’s flat or steep.

Focus on the ‘feel’ of the good positions when you’re static and also when you’re hitting either straight shots or the flight you want, so that you can replicate them.

1 Check your fundamentals regularly

The first thing you need to do is check your fundamentals, especially alignment. It’s easy to slip into bad habits without noticing it, so stay on top of these and you’ve got a chance of building a good and consistent swing.

2 Make sure you’re on plane

The top of the swing is a great ‘check’ position because it’s a natural pause. Try not to get too much shoulder turn to keep the swing compact. The shaft should point at the ball if you’re on plane.

3 Keep your height and extend arms

do not dip down too much at impact – try to maintain your height and extend through the ball with your arms. Keep your body rotating in the downswing so that the club doesn’t get stuck behind you.

4 A good finish comes from a good swing

The finish is important. If you can get to this balanced position with your upper body facing just left of target, spine tilted right and shaft through the eye line, you’ve made a good swing.
