PETALING JAYA: After three months without any training, the sight of the floor carpet, parallel bar and balance beam left national gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi (pic) beaming with delight.

The 26-year-old, who has qualified for the Olympics, is one of the athletes in the Road to Tokyo centralised camp at the National Sports Council in Bukit Jalil, which started on June 8.

Together with Tracie Ang, Tan Ing Yueh and Rachel Yeoh Li Wen and coaches Nataliya Sinkova and Ng Shu Wai, they resumed training on Thursday and have started doing light sessions to get used to the apparatuses at the gymnasium.

“I am thrilled to be back training and preparing for the Olympics. It’s nice to use the apparatuses and do gymnastics again.

“I’m also glad to see my coaches and teammates face to face again,” said Farah.

“I understand that there is a SOP (standard operating procedure) in place and it is for our safety to start training with only four of us.

“We are in a quite good shape physically. We have been doing home workouts for the past three months.

“It was a good session, and I felt good. A little bit out of touch but I think I will be able to get back into shape in a month or two.”

Farah qualified for the Olympics after finishing 59th out of 234 competitors in the individual all-around event at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.

She made the cut by finishing 16th out of 20 gymnasts in the third qualifying criteria.

The coaches have told the trainees that they will take it step by step to make sure the girls can get their rhythm and confidence back especially on the apparatuses.

“It’s very different than any other camp that I’ve been to.

“There are many rules that we are following to ensure everyone’s safety. I am slowly adapting to this new normal,” added Farah.
