A virtual goodbye
FOR the first time in the history of St. Michael’s Institution (SMI) Ipoh, a retirement ceremony for its teachers was a virtual affair.
Principal Sit Wai Yin, school administrators and teachers, Parent-Teacher Association, Old Michaelian Association (OMA) members, and Board of Governors representatives had ‘gathered’ online to say goodbye to veteran teacher and the school’s vocational and technical department head Bhajan Kaur Mohinder Singh.
Conducted via Google Meet on May 5, the meaningful ceremony saw the group celebrating her contributions to the school.
The national anthem and reading of Bhajan’s biodata kicked off the event before Sit delivered a speech highlighting Bhajan’s dedication and service to SMI.
With her husband by her side, Bhajan – who has dedicated 36 years to teaching – thanked the school community for the assistance, support and guidance shown throughout her tenure.
Expressing her gratitude to the past principals under whom she had served, Bhajan paid tribute to the teachers for their commitment towards helping young Michaelians strive for excellence and bring glory to SMI.
“You have all made my life more colourful, memorable and meaningful,” she said, calling on students to continue seeking knowledge to widen their horizons.
“Knowledge is power. Always work hard.”
Quoting Aristotle, she said: “The roots of education are bitter but the fruit is sweet”.
Ending her speech with: “Hello pension, goodbye tension”, Bhajan had everyone in stitches.
After the cake was cut, the hour-long event ended with teachers and students wishing her well for her future undertakings.
