PETALING JAYA: Numerous reminders by the police against driving while under the influence of alcohol seems to have fallen on deaf ears as more drivers were nabbed.

In a traffic operation conducted over the weekend in the district, five men were detained for drink-driving.

Drink-driving not only endangers the drivers themselves but also other road users.

ACP Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal

OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the five suspects, aged between 30 and 49, were arrested between 11pm on Saturday and 3am yesterday.

“Tests conducted on them showed the level of alcohol was over the permitted limit.

“We also checked 467 vehicles and issued 22 summonses for various offences,” he said in a statement.

ACP Nik Ezanee said the main focus of the operation was to curb and prevent motorists from riding and driving while intoxicated.

“It is unfortunate that there are still motorists who refused to heed our calls.

“Drink-driving not only endangers the drivers themselves but also other road users,” he said.

In Kajang, a total of 13 people were detained for driving recklessly following an operation near the Bangi toll plaza.

Selangor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Azman Shari’at said 453 summonses were issued for various traffic violations during the seven-hour operation which started at 11pm on Saturday.

“A total of 247 people along with 227 motorcycles and 12 cars were inspected.

“We are serious about nabbing those who endanger themselves and other motorists,” he told reporters yesterday.

Two motorists tested positive for drugs while another was found to be using a stolen vehicle.

“Personnel from the Selangor Road Transport Department also assisted in the operation,” he added.

Those detained were taken to the Kajang police headquarters for investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act, Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act and Section 379A of the Penal Code.

Supt Azman urged all motorists and road users to abide by traffic rules and regulations at all times.
