Students going back to school with precautions
PETALING JAYA: Many students returning to school tomorrow will be taking precautions, aside from observing the standard operating procedure (SOP) imposed by authorities to check Covid-19.
Form Six student Yee Ziann, from Melaka, said he would be wearing a mask to school and bringing along his own hand sanitiser.
“I’m looking forward to normal classes and meeting up with my friends after a long three months,” he said, but added the thought of close contact with others made him nervous.
“Mingling around people will increase the risk of contracting the virus and passing it to my family,” he said.
Ziann is eager to resume face-toface learning and his teachers have sent a poster of the SOP via Telegram.
Last week, the government announced the reopening of schools for students who are candidates of public exams, as well as international exams of the same standard starting June 24.
It is not compulsory for students to don face masks according to the Education Ministry’s 36-page school reopening management guidelines.
Mak Jun Le, 19, will be wearing a face shield as well as a mask when he returns to the Tun Fatimah Form Six College in Melaka tomorrow.
“What if one of the students is a carrier of the virus? Prevention is better than cure.
“I must ensure I have done all I can to prevent myself from being infected,” he said.
Durga Selvadurai will also be wearing a face mask when she goes to school.
The 17-year-old from SMK (P) Sri Aman, Petaling Jaya, said her school had a special meeting with all the returning students online to explain the SOP.
“It is a bit confusing as there are so many rules for us to follow,” she said when asked what she thought about the SOP.
SMK (P) Pudu, Kuala Lumpur, student Yeoh Cheng Yen, 17, said she would also bring a mask along “just in case”.
However, she will only wear it when necessary as she finds it uncomfortable.
