Zarina Anjoulie’s defamation suit to be heard on July 10

PETALING JAYA: The application by actress Zarina Anjoulie for the High Court to enter a judgment against actress Amyza Aznan, who failed to respond to a RM3mil defamation suit, is set to be heard on July 10.

Zarina, 34, whose full name is Zarina Anjoulie Mohamad Fahizul, filed suit over Amyza’s statement about a special aid provided by the government under Bantuan Prihatin Nasional for artistes in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Justice Azimah Omar set the date during the case proceedings yesterday, in the presence of Zarina’s lawyer Nurul Hafidzah Hassan.

The judge ordered a letter of notification be sent to the defendant, Amyza, 46, to inform her of the new date. The application was supposed to be heard yesterday.

Earlier, Nurul Hafidzah told the court that the case had been widely reported in the media and the defendant should have taken note of yesterday’s proceedings.

The lawyer said Amyza had failed to enter a response after the suit was filed on April 23, and delivered to her by hand on April 24 and via registered post on April 28.

“Amyza has not even responded to the letter served to her and we still have yet to receive any memorandum from her side,” she said.

Zarina claimed that on March 29, a group known as “Bantuan CovidSeni 2020” was created on the Telegram app to discuss the Covid19 assistance for local artistes, whereby at least 819 artistes and arts activists joined the group, including Amyza.

Zarina claimed that through the group, Amyza had used defamatory words against her.

She claimed that Amyza had also posted defamatory words against her on Instagram in April which implied that she was bad-tempered, a hypocrite and made use of other people to slander other artistes. Zarina claimed that the words tarnished her reputation, causing her to be depressed.

She is seeking general, special and exemplary damages, cost and interest, and other relief deemed fit by the court.
