National coach Chong Ming gets a head start with videos

- PETALING JAYA:

Chan Chong Ming will have a head start when he begins his duty as the women’s doubles head coach on July 1.

The former international will only report for duty at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara then but he has not been wasting any time – he has been viewing videos of his charges in action during tournaments.

Chong Ming has been tasked by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) with raising the standard of women shuttlers, including two of his top pairs Lee Meng Yean-Chow Mei Kuan and Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen.

Of the two pairs, Meng Yean-Mei Kuan are in the race to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Chong Ming, who was supposed to report for duty on June 15 was delayed due to the strict processes put in place at the training centre. However, he is hoping that the early analysis of his players via videos will give him an edge.

“I’ve not communicated with the players yet as I have not officially started work with BAM but I have watched the videos of my future players. I have some ideas,” said Chong Ming.

“I’ve taken notes and I guess it will make it easier when I meet the players eventually to discuss both their game and future in the team.”

While waiting to rejoin BAM, the former World No. 1 player Chong Ming also took his time to be part of a charity initiative for Assunta Children Society together with mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying.

Both Chong Ming-Liu Ying were present when Fusionex founder and group chief operating officer Datuk Seri Ivan Teh handed over RM10,000 to Maria Chan, who is the director of the hospital’s children society, on Wednesday.
