Field feels good, but Syahmi’s beefing up at the gym

-

PETALING JAYA: Selangor’s young rightback Syahmi Safari is glad to be back on the field again, but his real work is still getting done in the indoor gym.

After three months away from the game, he is back with his side in the “new normal” training that does not allow bodily contact.

Syahmi has no problem with that because he is using his time in training to build on his strength and fitness to ensure he is at his best when the season resumes, very likely in early September.

“After three months without any football action, it is good to get our fitness and strength back with the resumption of training,” said the 22-year-old Kuala Selangor lad, who has been an integral part of the Red Giants squad with his pace, crosses and work rate on the wings.

He has also shown his adaptability by going forward as a winger and shutting down opposing wingers with his interceptions and tackles as well.

“A wingback needs to work on his body contact and tackles, but the SOPs do not allow us to do that. Thus, I am strengthening my upper and lower body with lots of gym work.

“It is time to add some muscles to ensure that I am prepared for the restart,” he said.

With the Super League to resume with a gruelling seven-game schedule within a month, Syahmi feels it is best to be very fit and strong.

“Coach (B. Sathianathan) is someone who always emphasises on fitness and physical strength. The league format has been changed, and as professionals, we have to be prepared.

“All the players need to be prepared because it would be impossible to play the same eleven in all seven games in a month.

“There will be rotation. Thus, we must keep ourselves in prime shape. The seven-match scenario means that it can be anyone’s title now.”

The youngster believes Selangor, who are currently sixth in the league with five points, should take it one game at a time if they want to finish well in the league.
