Woman fined RM6,000 for pinching baby’s ear

A woman who bruised a 10-month-old baby’s ears was fined RM6,000, in default three months’ jail, by the Sessions Court here.

Judge Mahyon Talib meted out the fine on Noor Aziana A. Samad, 33, after she pleaded guilty to the charge yesterday.

Questioned by the judge on why she did so, Noor Aziana, who has three children of her own, said she felt agitated because the child was always crying and there was no water supply at home at the time.

She was charged with pinching the baby, who is her neighbour’s son, at a house in Taman Melati, Wangsa Maju at 2pm last March 5.

The charge is under Section 31(1) (a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides a maximum fine of RM50,000, or imprisonme­nt for up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction .

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurliyana Mohd Jafri prosecuted, while the woman was unrepresen­ted.

In Labuan, the Magistrate’s Court fined a forwarding clerk RM6,000 in default nine months jail for secretly disposing the body of a premature baby girl she had delivered into a sewerage drain last year.

Magistrate Kasyurrahm­an Abang Ahmad passed the sentence on Maria Resi Pora, 27, after she pleaded guilty yesterday to committing the offence at a rented house here at about 3am on Nov 4, 2019.

Indah Water Consortium employees undertakin­g routine maintenanc­e work found the body of the newborn caught in a rubbish trap of a sewerage plant at about 8am the following day.

Her boyfriend, civil servant Muhammad Izzuddin Awang Limun, 26, who was jointly charged with the offence, pleaded not guilty and the court set Aug 20 for case management.

He was released on bail of RM1,500 in two sureties.
