IPOH: A lorry driver was killed while a policeman suffered broken ribs in an accident involving two lorries at the 383rd kilometre northbound of the North-South Expressway, near Slim River.

A three-tonne lorry slammed into the back of another lorry parked by the roadside.

Muallim OCPD Supt Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said prior to the incident at 2am yesterday, a police patrol vehicle team had stopped a lorry, which was transporting parcels, for inspection.

“The lorry driver alighted from his vehicle after being approached by a policeman.

“Shortly after, the three-tonne lorry that had lost control slammed into the back of the parked lorry,” said Supt Sulizmie.

The impact, he said, caused both lorries to lunge about 16m forward onto the road shoulder.

“The policeman and lorry driver were dragged towards a lamp post.

The latter died on the spot,” he said.

Supt Sulizmie said the policeman was rushed to Slim River Hospital for treatment.

He said the case would be investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving resulting in death.

According to a state Fire and Rescue Department spokesman, the deceased was identified as 42-yearold Mohd Hairi Zainal Abidin.

The spokesman said the driver of the other lorry, Anuar Nayan, 46, and his attendant Mohd Shukri Jamaluddin, 35, were both trapped inside their vehicle after the collision and suffered injuries.

Meanwhile, Mohd Hairi’s attendant, Mohd Amree Che Mee, 39, was unharmed.

The policeman and lorry driver were dragged towards a lamp post. The latter died on the spot.
