Agonising miss for Kelly at Women’s British Open.
Tan misses cut again, in the gruelling Troon
Third time’s still not the charm for national No. 1 Kelly Tan as she fell agonisingly short of the cut at the Women’s British Open.
The 26-year-old Kelly’s first Major campaign in four years ended on Friday when she missed out by just one shot at the unforgiving Royal Troon Golf Club, where only the leader managed to stay under par.
Kelly battled to a seven-over 78 in the second round and finished on 10-over 152.
She had a birdie, six bogeys and one double bogey to slip to joint-75th, down 42 rungs from where she was at the start of the day. The cut was at nine-over.
It was Kelly’s third missed cut in as many attempts at the Women’s British Open, having previously fallen short in the 2015 and 2016 editions.
A host of top guns, including defending champion Hinako Shibuno of Japan and former winners Stacy Lewis (2003) of the United States and South Korean Kim In-kyung (2017) were also blown off course in wet and windy conditions.
Sweden’s Dani Holmqvist was the only player to reach the halfway stage under-par as her one-under 141 effort put her one shot ahead of American Austin Ernst and Germany’s Sophia Popov.
This week’s result ended Kelly’s fine run on the LPGA Tour this season where she advanced to the weekend rounds in all her five appearances to date.
Her best finish was tying for ninth at the Marathon Classic two weeks ago.
Kelly will aim to bounce back when she returns to the US for the NW Arkansas Championship, which begins next Thursday.
